Sad saga of the outboard motor

I haven’t been treating my outboard well, so it’s no wonder that when I needed it – it wouldn’t start.

For two springs in a row, the motor started in my yard and successfully got me out to the mooring after launch.  But I took advantage of her good nature and didn’t keep her clean, or give her fresh gas to drink.  So when the wind died while I was in the middle of the bay, guess who wouldn’t start for me?  ”Serves you right” you say, and you’d be correct.

I’ll be starting fresh with a new Honda outboard – something lighter that I can keep below.  I vow to keep it healthy.  As for the 15hp Johnson, I’ll fix it up and try to sell it to someone who will threat it well.

    Hi Rick,
I have enjoyed reading your blog regarding you adventures sailing and owning Dragonfly.

I’m an Electra owner as well. My Father aquired the 4 year old used boat the year before I was born and I spent every summer sailing on her In Northport Bay Long Island when I was a child. My Dad gave her to me when I turned 18 and I sailed her as much as time and weather allowed untill I was 27 and my own child was born. She was mothballed and unused for 15 years and last summer my son and I have decided to bring her back to life. Shes about 46 years old and really needs some TLC after sitting so long. My Son is almost 16 now and he is very excited to learn to single hand her and what it means to be a boat owner.

Would love to exchange adventures with you. I have a friend that lives in RI and will be visiting in 2 summers when the boat will be ready for launching. Don’t know much about your waters up there and could use some advice from a native. :) Good ports to visit, restaurants, etc.
My email is oceandeb@aol.com. Feel free to write whenever you can.
    Sincerely, Debbie Grimes
